Did you know that parabens are a class of preservatives commonly used in all kinds of skincare and beauty products? Did you also know that manufacturers that make these products are not required to disclose cancer causing ingredients like parabens or other harmful by products that are in all this stuff that is supposed to make you "beautiful". Do not even get me started on hair dyes!!
Well, it is without a doubt, a very deep rabbit hole you can go down and believe me it is worth a little time educating yourself about all these chemicals that can cause harm to you and your loved ones.
But today I want to focus on deodorants and how easy it is to make a chemical free version yourself. Deodorants are a product a lot of use everyday to make us stop sweating and they are basically a chemical bomb. Wait a minute....WHAT?? WHY??? Sweating is a normal bodily function that naturally detoxifies us. So lets try to deal with the "shame" of sweating and just get over it! It is ok. But I, like you, do not want to smell like.....oh I don't know....something dead--yuck.
So I want to share this recipe today so you can make your own deodorant that will keep your underarms--under control and keep you smelling fresh without all the nasty cancer triggers.
First, a little fact. According to Dr. Philippa Darbre, 99% of breast cancer tissue contain parabens. hmmmmmm.
You can pick up empty deodorant containers at your local health food or herb shop...if not, you can find them on amazon.
Ingredients:
5 Tablespoons organic coconut oil
3 Tablespoons aluminum free baking soda (I use Bob's Red Mill--easy to find)
2 Tablespoons organic corn starch (also easy to find )
3 grams beeswax
5-10 drops of pure essential oil of your choice--add a few drops at a time to see how strong the scent is getting. The scent will fade a bit so go ahead and throw in that extra drop or 2!
Here are some anti bacterial and anti microbial essential oils that will kill bacteria under your arms: Eucalyptus, Tea Tree, Lavender, Frankincense, Bergamot, Oregano, Clove, Thyme, Grapefruit, Cinnamon, Lemon and Rosemary---I am sure I left a bunch out so research more if you want...but these are a good start.
Melt the oils and beeswax in a double boiler. When melted remove from heat and add the baking soda, corn starch and essential oils of your choice.
Pour into container and be careful----hot oil is, well....hot.
I usually let this firm up a bit then pop into fridge. When it is hard I just keep it on my vanity and that is it!!
You can do this. Please leave me a comment and tell me how it turned out for you.
I truly hope you consider getting some of the chemicals out of your life
Thanks for finding me, Jules
